While the previous answer is Correct (I will give it a thumbs up), I suspect that your problem is related to the actual code, more than the location you are placing the code.

Are you aware that most of the online now icons, you find, come with code that does NOT work?

Some come with code that puts a permanent icon there (it is ALWAYS there, even after myspace knows you are no longer online).

Other code does NOTHING, it puts a background image to a div, that has not existed since Feb 2007 (well it existed for a few days in September, and a few hours in October0.
